Faculty Lecture Series Presentation at Central College Focuses on Flint Water Crisis

by Central College

Pella, IA (02/03/2020) — Central College professors Paul Weihe and Cathy Haustein will present "Flint, Michigan, and the Water Supply: How Safe is Our Own Drinking Water?" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Boat/Moore rooms of Maytag Student Center.

The presentation is the third of five in the college's 2019-20 Faculty Lecture Series with a focus on civic engagement. It's free and open to the public.

Weihe is associate professor of biology at Central, where he has taught since 1998. He is an expert in wetland ecosystems, ethnobotany, ecology and environmental science.

Haustein is professor of chemistry and an expert in analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, instrumental analysis, the extraction of alkaloids from natural products, environmentally friendly laboratory experiences and fluorescence spectroscopy. She has taught at Central since 1983.

The presentation will focus on this year's common read for first-year students, "What the Eyes Don't See" by Mona Hanna-Attisha, a book that brought attention to the story behind the discovery of lead in Flint's water supply. Weihe and Haustein will discuss whether this is something that could happen in our community.
