Coe takes down Central in women's basketball
The Dutch were held to 28.6% shooting in the fourth quarter
Pella, IA (02/03/2025) — The Central College women's basketball team battled but came up short losing to Coe College 68-64.
The game had 18 ties and 13 lead changes, but the Kohawks pulled away in the final quarter. After each team scored 16 points in the first two quarters and a 2-point Central lead after the third quarter, Coe held the Dutch to 28.6% shooting from the field and 0-4 from three-point range in the fourth quarter.
"I am extremely proud of our women tonight, they fought for all 40 minutes," said coach Justin Weiland. "We wanted to have a bounce back game from the Simpson game and the first time we played Coe. We played good basketball, and we can learn from losing these close games. If we keep playing like we did today the results will take care of themselves."
The Dutch were led in scoring by Emily Naughton (sophomore, Indianola) with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting. She also collected six rebounds and one steal. Abby Johnson (senior, Ankeny) also reached double figures scoring 10 points.
Central's bench continues to impress. They outscored Coe's bench 20-8 and was led by Jasmyn Williams (junior, Denver Colo., Arvada West HS) scoring eight points and dishing out two assists. Samantha Scott (senior, Davenport, North Scott HS) added six points on 2-of-3 shooting from three, and Bailey Reding (junior, Grundy Center) added four points.
Hannah Dau (senior, Paullina, South O'Brien) led the squad with four assists while also scoring six points. CeCe Moore (sophomore, Waterloo, West HS) scored nine points and added six rebounds. Gabby Moore (senior, Waterloo, West HS) added seven points.
As a team Central shot 44.1% from the field and 23.8% from three. Coe shot 48.3% from the field and 26.7% from three. Coe had 13 turnovers compared to Central who only had nine.
"Coe put a lot of pressure on the ball, but we were moving the ball well in our half court offense," Weiland said. "We were composed and under control on our drives and we did a great job taking care of the ball. We didn't let the physicality of the game get to us and rose to the occasion."
The Dutch return to the court when they travel to Buena Vista Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
