Central women's basketball team falls on the road to ranked Wartburg
The Dutch collected 14 steals
Pella, IA (01/27/2025) — A slow start caused the Central College women's basketball team to fall to No. 12-ranked Wartburg College 70-58.
The Dutch (11-7, 4-4 American Rivers) got behind 14-6 at the end of the first quarter but responded well by only trailing 55-52 the other three quarters.
"I loved our fight today," said coach Justin Weiland. "We missed some shots in the paint in the first quarter, but our women answered the bell today and battled the whole second half."
Emily Naughton (sophomore, Indianola) led the team with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting while also dishing out four assists.
The Dutch had another good outing from their bench, combining for 25 points, and was led by Kaitlyn Mumm (sophomore, Waukee, Des Moines Christian HS) who scored 12 points shooting 3-of-4 from three-point range while also collecting five rebounds, one block and one steal. Samantha Scott (senior, Davenport, North Scott HS) added eight points while also collecting three steals.
"It is great to have depth, we are top three in the conference in bench points, and it was great to see our bench succeed," Weiland said. "Scott was able to get good looks from three and was able to cash them in. We want Mumm to be one of our go to options and she was hot today."
CeCe Moore (sophomore, Waterloo, West HS) added eight points, one block and two steals. Abby Johnson (senior, Ankeny) contributed six points, three steals, and six rebounds. The Dutch combined for 14 steals as a team.
Central shot 34% from the field and 42.1% from three. Wartburg shot 41.8% from the field but only 23.8% from three. The Knights (16-2, 9-0 American Rivers) also scored 34 points in the paint compared to only 20 from the Dutch.
The team plays next when it takes on Simpson College Wednesday in P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
