Central's Brown excels in mile race at Boston
Webster also notches a pair of personal-best marks
Boston, Mass. (02/17/2025) — Central College men's track and field sophomore Jack Brown (sophomore, Norwalk) came within a second of breaking the school record in the men's mile Friday at the Daivid Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University.
With 20 heats and a total of 354 runners, Brown clocked in at 4 minutes, 6.15 seconds. His time is second in program history and just short of Noah Jorgenson's record mark set at 4:05.18 in 2023.
"He had a really big second half of the race," associate head coach Joe Dunham said. "He was able to get down to about 60 seconds for the last 400 meters. He's coming along very nicely, and the next few weeks are going to be very exciting."
Derek Webster (senior, Norwalk) ran a pair of personal bests Friday. He also competed in the mile, finishing 278th in 4:17.81. In the 3,000-meter run, he was 241st in a time of 8:42.53
"I was really proud of Derek today," Dunham said. "He had a great double with a big PR in the mile and then came back an hour and 45 minutes later and ran a great 3K. He's in a really good place right now and I'm excited to see what he does over the next few weeks."
Central has a few entries in women's events in Boston Saturday. The rest of the team is in Grinnell for the Darren Young Classic.
