Central RED Society to Present Cancer Researcher Nyla Heerema
Pella, IA (02/04/2019) — Nyla Heerema will discuss "Visions of Cancer" at the next Central Red Society event. Lunch starts at noon and the presentation is at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, in the Boat/Moore/Weller Room of the Maytag Student Center on the Central College Campus in Pella, Iowa. Cost is $10.
Heerema earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Central in 1963. She has a doctorate in genetics from the University of Iowa and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in medical cytogenetics at Indiana University College of Medicine. Now a professor at The Ohio State University, she directs a large clinical laboratory and conducts research on the cytogenetics of leukemia, focusing on adult chronic lymphocytic leukemia and pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She will discuss how cytogenetics impacts treatment of pediatric ALL patients and the advances made in treating the disease.
