Central Graduate Eoin Breadon Presents Exhibit in Mills Gallery
Pella, IA (09/19/2019) — Central College is proud to welcome back Eoin Breadon, Central College Class of 1997, for an alumnus art exhibition Sept. 25 to Oct. 18 in the Mills Gallery in the Lubbers Center for the Visual Arts.
Breadon's work consists of finely crafted glass sculpture. He uses this challenging and often fragile medium to tell stories. In doing so, he carries on an Irish tradition called seanchai (shan-a-hee). In his artist statement, Breadon describes seanchai as "the traditional Irish storyteller, who is responsible for the transmission of Celtic culture, the history and laws of the people that were not written down but memorized in long lyric poems which were recited." Breadon works to convey ideas with artistic license while remaining faithful to the idea of cultural transmission, so much a part of Irish folklore and craft.
"It's always great to reconnect with Eoin. He had an exhibition here in 2006 and demonstrated in the glassblowing classes. Students were blown away by his glass sculpting. It will be great to introduce Eoin and his work to a new batch of students," says Brian Roberts, professor of art.
Breadon has trained in glass studios in the United States, Ireland and Australia. He received his MFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 2004. In addition to showing his work internationally, Breadon is Chair of Design at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. His work has entered public and private collections around the world.
The public is invited to an art reception in the gallery at 4 p.m. Sept. 27. The show opening coincides with Central's Homecoming festivities. The gallery also will be open for viewing from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 28. The Mills Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
