Central College's Mills Gallery Presents Exhibit of Artists' Books

by Central College

Pella, IA (11/05/2018) — Central College presents "Vignettes," a solo show of artists' books by Joan Soppe, at the Mills Gallery located in the Lubbers Center for the Visual Arts on Central's campus.

"Through her use of nontraditional materials and book-making techniques, Joan brings new and sometimes unexpected reflections on daily life," says Treva Reimer, Central professor of art and the gallery's exhibit curator.

Soppe's books are held in many private and public collections, including The Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

"I focus on one-of-a-kind and small-editioned artists' books," Soppe writes. "Handmade papers, letterpress and intaglio form the foundation of my work, while metal, glass, found objects and collage techniques enhance and further define the intent.

"Much of my work is concerned with women's lives," she adds.

The exhibit opens Wednesday, Nov. 14 and runs until Friday, Dec. 7. The public is invited to an opening reception at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in the gallery. The Mills Gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. The gallery will be closed for Thanksgiving Nov. 22- 23.
