Central College's Mills Gallery Presents "Shifting Structures" by Jane South

by Central College

Pella, IA (02/04/2019) — Central College presents "Shifting Structures," an exhibition by Jane South, at the Mills Gallery in the Lubbers Center for the Visual Arts on Central's campus.

The work consists of a series of components that are re-configured according to the specifics of each venue.

"At once an ever-mutating sculptural drawing and a reflection of our shifting architectural environment, the work is constructed on-site utilizing the architectural peculiarities of the chosen space," according to South's website, www.janesouth.com.

South is the 2019 Allison B. Allen artist in residence at Central. The residency is made possible through an endowed fund created by former Central administrator Hutch Bearce and Gretchen Bearce. The annual residency seeks "artists who have a new, interdisciplinary approach to bring to campus."

"We are looking forward to seeing her work installed in the Mills Gallery and for the chance to speak with her personally about her work and creative process," says Mat Kelly, associate professor of art.

South is an artist and educator. She is currently the chair of fine arts at Pratt Institute in New York and is known for her elaborate sculptural drawings. South's work has been exhibited across the United States and abroad.

Her work "cuts across the disciplines and reflects the intersectional nature of contemporary arts practice," according to Gerry Snyder, dean of the School of Art at Pratt Institute.

The exhibit will open Thursday, Feb. 14, and runs through March 8. The public is invited to the opening reception at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 14 in the gallery. The Mills Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
