Central College Professors to Discuss Diversity, Inclusion in STEM

by Central College

Pella, IA (02/25/2021) — Russ Goodman, professor of mathematics, and Liz Golovatski, assistant professor of physics, will present "Who should be in STEM?" from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 2.

The presentation is part of Central's 2021 Faculty Lecture Series with a focus on diversity and inclusion. It can be accessed via Zoom.

While attainment gaps persist for women and people of color, the fight continues to make STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers open to all. Goodman and Golovatski will explore the notion of "belonging" and why people self-select into or out of STEM. They will share numbers, stories and ideas and hope to learn from the wisdom and experience of the audience.

Goodman has taught at Central since 2002 and specializes in sports analytics, algebraic geometry, mathematics in pop culture and teaching mathematical communication skills.

Golovatski has been at Central since 2015 and teaching undergraduate physics since 2011. She is a condensed matter physicist, specializing in computational modeling of nanoscale magnetic systems.

Central College of Pella, Iowa, is a private, four-year liberal arts college. Central is known for its academic rigor, leadership and character development, global experiential learning, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and sustainability education, athletics and service.
