Central College Professor to Discuss Sikhs and Anthropologists in Faculty Lecture Series

Pella, IA (02/24/2020) — Cynthia Mahmood, the Frank Moore Endowed Chair in Anthropology and professor of anthropology at Central College, will present "Civic Engagement Between Sikhs and Anthropologists" at 7 p.m. Monday, March 9, in the Boat/Moore rooms of Maytag Student Center.

The presentation is the fourth of five in the Central's 2019-20 Faculty Lecture Series with a focus on civic engagement. It is free and open to the public.

Sikhism is a faith tradition in which the spirit and the world are one piece; prayer and meditation are but the other side of service to community. Ethnographic work with Sikhs reveals a complex theology and history around this concept, which inspires a similarly engaged ethos in the anthropologist herself.

Mahmood is an expert on human rights and has taught at Central since 2014.
