Central College Faculty Member to Attend Chicago Semester Summer Program

Pella, IA (04/07/2022) — Maggie Schlerman, a Central College associate professor of accounting and 2002 graduate, has been selected to participate in Chicago Semester's Summer 2022 Scholar-In-Residence Program.

Central is one of six founding institutions for the Chicago Semester. This program helps build relationships among faculty from the founding institutions by providing opportunities to conduct research with resources available in Chicago. Schlerman is one of 11 scholars selected for this program. She will spend two weeks during the summer in Chicago furthering her research alongside faculty from other colleges in the Midwest.

Schlerman received her B.A. in business management from Central in 2002 before earning her master's in accounting from Iowa State University. She has been a faculty member at Central since 2013. During her time at Central, Schlerman's involvement in the economics, accounting and management department has included acting as the site coordinator for Central's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and leading students on many domestic and international trips.

While participating in the Chicago program, Schlerman intends to redesign Central's accounting curriculum, complete American Institute of Certified Public Accountants professional development programs and plan for future department trips to Chicago. She feels that the connections she will make in Chicago will give her invaluable industry insight.

"I'm looking forward to connecting with partners in Chicago to develop and enhance opportunities for Central students studying business management and accounting," Schlerman says.

Schlerman's participation in the Scholar-In-Residence program is an opportunity in which she can continue to improve her caliber as a scholar and professor. Programs like these benefit the entire Central community through the connections made with other academics and by modeling a dedication to lifelong learning.

Central College of Pella, Iowa, is a private, four-year liberal arts college. Central is known for its academic rigor and leadership formation and for cultivating diversity of thought and culture through the arts and sciences, professional fields of study and experiential learning.
