Central College Faculty Lecture Series Features Tuan Nguyen

by Central College

Pella, IA (03/07/2019) — Central College's Living in Community Faculty Lecture Series will feature Tuan Nguyen, assistant professor of economics. Nguyen will present "Do Immigrants Lower Wages for Native Workers? Evidence from the Mariel Boatlift." The lecture will take place 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in the Boat/Moore rooms located in Maytag Student Center on Central's campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The 1980 Mariel Boatlift provides a natural experiment for whether an influx of immigration directly impacts the wages of native workers and whether a direct relationship can be drawn between the two. Nguyen investigates if an increase in Cuban immigrants caused the wages of native workers in Miami to change.

This is the third of four events in the Living in Community Faculty Lecture Series. The fourth is set for April 16 and will feature Anna Christensen, lecturer in philosophy.
