Central College Faculty Lecture Series Features Michael Harris

by Central College

This event has now been rescheduled.

Pella, IA (02/20/2019) — UPDATE: Professor of English Michael Harris' presentation, Mr. Pynchon Goes to Iowa: Thomas Pynchon's Search for Community, as part of the second annual Faculty Lecture Series, has been rescheduled for 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in the Van Emmerik Studio in the Maytag Center on Central's campus.

Harris' topic will be "Mr. Pynchon Goes to Iowa: Thomas Pynchon's Search for Community." Pynchon, an American novelist, originally avoided and criticized the region as a cultural wasteland. Later, aversion gave way to recognition.

Harris examines Pynchon's portrayal of the Midwest-and Iowa-as a metaphor for a now unavailable imagined community.

This is the second of four events in the Faculty Lecture Series with the theme "Living in Community." The third is scheduled for March 26 and will feature Tuan Nguyen, assistant professor of economics. The fourth is set for April 16 and will feature Anna Christensen, lecturer in philosophy.
