Buena Vista ends Central men's basketball win streak
The Dutch had four players score in double figures
Storm Lake, IA (02/06/2025) — A barrage of second half threes lead Buena Vista University to a 83-77 win over Central College.
After Central (13-8, 8-4 American Rivers) took a 43-35 lead into halftime when it shot 54.5% from the field, it was not enough to overcome the Beavers 11-of-19 from three-point land in the second half and scoring 48 points.
"Buena Vista was incredible from three," coach Joe Steinkamp said. "They made 19 three-point shots with 13 of them coming off the bench. They made some big shots. We went cold in the second half despite getting good looks."
The Dutch totaled 50 points in the paint being led by Joshua Van Gorp (5th-year, Pella, Pella Christian HS) and Karson Wehde (sophomore, Ankeny). Van Gorp shot 10-of-12 from the field for 26 points while also collecting nine rebounds. Wehde scored 23 points while also dishing out three assists and grabbing seven rebounds.
"Van Gorp and Wehde did a great job of scoring in the paint," Steinkamp said.
The two other Dutch players to score double figures were freshmen Owen Schipper (Waukee) and Grant Uecker (Urbandale). Schipper scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds and added three steals. Uecker scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting while also dishing out three assists.
Kaleb Brand (5th-year, Mount Vernon) added four points and three assists while Bradley Curren (sophomore, Harlan) also dished out three assists.
For the game Central shot 50.8% from the field, 23.8% from three and 12-of-15 from the free throw line compared to Buena Vista's 44.4% from the field and 45.3% from three. Central also had 14 assists and outrebounded the Beavers (11-9, 7-5 American Rivers 34-29.
"Overall, we played a pretty good game on offense, the three pointers were the key stat of the game."
The Dutch will look to bounce back on the road in Dubuque against Loras College Saturday at 4 p.m.
