Local student inducted into honor society at Central College

2014 Jul 7

Central College student Melissa Ketcham was recently inducted into mathematics honor society Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME). Ketcham was one of 14 charter members for Central College's new KME chapter, which includes 12 students, professor of mathematics Wendy Weber and associate professor of mathematics Russ Goodman. KME National Treasurer Cynthia Huffman, a professor at Pittsburg State University, traveled to Pella to induct the Central members.

According to Goodman, the chapter's faculty adviser, the installation of a Central KME chapter raises the profile of the mathematics program to a national level. Students need not major in mathematics to participate, but Goodman said the chapter offers an honorary organization for those who excel in mathematics and related fields.

Founded in 1931, KME currently has over 80,000 members in 35 states. The society name translates, "Develop an appreciation for the beauty in mathematics." Since its inception, the organization has sought to fulfill this motto and promote interest in mathematics among undergraduate students.
