Based on two short stories by Damon Runyon, "Guys and Dolls" was written by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. Set in Runyon's mythical New York City, the oddball romantic comedy has one of the most recognized musical theater scores of all time. Musical numbers include "Luck Be a Lady" and "A Bushel and a Peck."

Originally opened in 1950, "Guys and Dolls" was met with high accolades. It won Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Choreography in 1951, among other recognitions. It has maintained prominence since its original opening, with Broadway revivals in 1976, 1992 and 2009. The show collected Tony nominations for Best Musical Revival each time, winning the award in 1992.

Theatre Central hosts four main-stage shows each year, with one featured musical on alternate years.

The production of "Guys and Dolls" is a joint effort between Theatre Central and the Central music department. Theatre majors and minors are collaborating with a wide spectrum of the student body, including the Central College Chamber Singers, to bring the production to life. The Chamber Singers is a select 20-person vocal ensemble made up of members of the Central College A Cappella Choir.

"Guys and Dolls" is directed by Ann Wilkinson, instructor of theatre. The orchestra is led by assistant professor of music Mitch Lutch with vocal direction by Anne Petrie, professor of music.

Ticket cost is $9 for general admission or $5 for students and senior citizens. Admission is free with a Central ID. Tickets are available at the Central College Maytag Box Office. For more information contact Wilkinson at 641-628-5234 or wilkinsona@central.edu.
